3 admit smuggling fake electronics into US from China
NEWARK - Three people have admitted in federal court in Newark that they smuggled more than 40,000 counterfeit electronics from China for sale in the United States.
Thirty-one-year-old Venezuelan national Andreina Becerra and Italian nationals 34-year-old Roberto Volpe and 54-year-old Rosario La Marca on Wednesday pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic counterfeit goods, to smuggle goods into the US and to structure financial transactions.
Prosecutors say the three conspired to smuggle fake devices including Apple iPhones and iPads from July 2009 through February 2014. The devices were then shipped to other conspirators and money was funneled back. Prosecutors say the genuine items would have been worth more than $15 million.
