Corrections NSW thwart tobacco smuggling attempt at St Heliers near Muswellbrook
CORRECTIONAL officers have struck paydirt with another tobacco haul in a Hunter prison.
Officers conducted “an intelligence-based search” at St Heliers Correctional Centre outside Muswellbrook, finding tobacco and other contraband in shopping bags in a nearby drain.
They also found black pepper, rolling papers and a bottle of Jack Daniels whisky alongside the 20 pouches of tobacco.
The Saturday search’s findings are estimated to have a value of about $6000 within the minimum security prison.
Fairfax Media reported last week on a similar haul at Cessnock Correctional Centre, where the tighter security sends the price of a single tobacco pouch skyrocketing close to $800 in maximum security.
