Guwahati: The anti-smuggling unit of the Guwahati Customs Division seized foreign cigarettes valued at Rs 1 crore during the night hours on Sunday from the premises of the National Postal Hub (NPH) in Kamrup district’s Mirza.
A total of 3.78 lakh cigarette sticks were smuggled from Mizoram and Nagaland. Anti-smuggling unit superintendent Abhijit Dey told the media, “We seized the items based on specific intel. The items were sent through the Indian Postal Service.”
The superintendent added that the items are repackaged upon arrival in India to conceal the brand names of the cigarettes and hidden beneath heaps of clothes to avoid detection. “These items were stored in 37 cartons and contained addresses of a pseudo recipient in Tamil Nadu. These items are often smuggled to Delhi and southern states of India via Guwahati,” the officer said.
