The air intelligence unit (AIU) of Mumbai Customs Tuesday arrested a 49-year-old man at the Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport while he was allegedly trying to smuggle gold worth Rs 1.45 crore from Malaysia to India.
According to the sources, the AIU officials on suspicion of smuggling intercepted a passenger, Jayesh Shah, on Tuesday morning. When the passenger was checked, small gold bars were found concealed under the clothes he was wearing.
The AIU officials said they have recovered gold bars weighing around 2.22 kg from Shah, a Dombivli resident. The seized gold is worth Rs 1.45 crore. Shah was subsequently placed under arrest under relevant sections of the Customs Act. During questioning, Shah admitted that he was smuggling gold from Malaysia to India, another source said.
