LUCKNOW: Two members of an interstate liquor smuggling gang was arrested from Para area of the city on Monday along with 172 bottles, which are together said to be worth Rs 6.5 lakh. Special Task Force officers have identified the two as Krishna and Phool Singh, both natives of Haryana. They were siphoning off the consignment to Bihar in a concealed space created in the chassis of a truck. “The truck was intercepted in Para and during inspection, the cavity was found. It contained 172 bottles of liquor,” said Abhishek Singh, SSP (STF), and added that the gang was taking the consignment from Haryana to Bihar, where sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited.

Eight men have been arrested after a anti-terrorism detectives uncovered an alleged organised crime syndicate accused of smuggling 475,000 packets of illegal cigarettes into Australia. The arrests came after a series of raids in Sydney’s southwest on Tuesday morning. The men first came to the attention of detectives who were investigating possible terrorism funding in New South Wales. A 38-year-old and a 39-year-old were arrested at a Sydney Olympic Park cafe after 8am on Tuesday and taken to local police stations. Later, 19 search warrants were executed in Sydney’s southwest at homes, businesses and storage units – leading to a further six arrests of men between the ages of 27 and 42. The eight accused men are expected to be charged with various offences, NSW police said in a statement.

The municipal government and customs said the city has stepped up efforts to crack down on the smuggling of ivory and other items related to endangered species this year. So far, 104 ivory items, 208 pieces of red coral, and giant clam and hawksbill products have been seized. The raw materials are typically made into craftwork, jewelry, stationery and tableware. One suspect has been detained because of smuggling, customs police said. Postal departments, airports, customs and wild animal protection organizations in Shenyang have collaborated in a special campaign against smuggling of endangered species products, introducing advanced detection facilities and strengthening inspections on inbound and outbound postal parcels and travelers’ luggage.

A shopkeeper who was caught hiding a huge stash of illegal cigarettes behind a fake wall has been slapped with an eye-watering £60,000 court bill. The huge haul – of 718 packs of cigarettes and 107 of tobacco – was discovered by sniffer dogs during the raid at Istanbul Mini-Market in High Street, Brierley Hill. Part of the illegal hoard was also found in Ali Ibrahim Hamad’s car in March 2017. All of the products failed to comply with UK regulations requiring health warnings to be displayed and five brands were found to be counterfeit. The duty evaded was thought to be around £4,400, according to a spokesman for Dudley Council. Hamad, aged 45 and from West Bromwich, was given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, after pleading guilty to seven offences at Wolver hampton Crown Court. He was found to have assets of £58,923, which is below the estimated £65,600 value of the benefit of the crime, and was therefore ordered to pay the entire amount under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a major haul, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized gold worth Rs 8.5 crore from a passenger at Trivandrum International Airport on Monday. It is the highest-ever seizure of gold reported at the airport. The passenger has been identified as Sunil, a native of Thirumala, who arrived from Muscat. He reached Trivandrum Airport in Oman Air flight WY 211 around 7.30am. Based on intelligence information, DRI regional unit officers intercepted the passenger on his arrival. The gold was found in the two hand bags carried by the passenger. The gold in form of bars was covered in aluminium foil in two packets. There were a total of 25 gold biscuits, each weighing 1kg, in the packets. “This is the highest quantity of gold seized at the airport. The passenger had gone to Muscat through visiting visa. Considering the permissible weight limit of cabin baggage in the flight, it is being investigated how the passenger took the bags inside the aircraft,” said a DRI official. A probe has been launched by DRI team under Customs Act.

The police have seized counterfeit Indian currency notes amounting to Rs 2, 00,000/- of denominations (Rs 2000/- × 100 pcs) in total from their possession. The arrested persons are identified as Mani Govindan and Velu Mallappan. In April too, Kolkata Police had seized FICN of Rs 5 lakh face value and had arrested two persons in connection with this case. The two FICN racketeers were arrested from the crossing of Gosto Paul Sarani and Leslie Claudius Sarani in Central Kolkata. It may be recalled that the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) district secretary Ambar Mitra had recently claimed that Kaliachak in West Bengal has always been the entry gate of fake currency in India. Mitra also remarked that the situation has remained unchanged despite demonetisation.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized gold bars worth nearly Rs eight crore which was smuggled into India from Myanmar, and arrested six people for allegedly being a part of the smuggling racket, according to an official statement issue Tuesday. The gold was smuggled into India from Myanmar through the porous Indo-Myanmar border at Moreh in Manipur. Acting on specific inputs, DRI officials Monday seized 24.15 kg gold bars valued at Rs 7.99 crore from the possession of six people who were travelling by bus from Manipur to Siliguri via Coochbehar, the statement said. The six people who have been arrested are residents of Manipur and were engaged in carrying smuggled foreign-origin gold for quite some time now, the DRI said in the statement.

PATNA: Liquor worth lakhs of rupees were seized and six people were held from a Duronto Express train in Barh area of Bihar’s Patna on Tuesday. According to the police, the liquor was being transported from West Bengal to the state, where liquor is prohibited. “We came to know that a Duronto Express stopped between Barh and Shahari Halt railway stations and liquor cartons were being unloaded. The police reached there and recovered a huge amount of liquor from the place,” Barh SHO Sanjeet Kumar said. Singh informed that the police were questioning the accused and trying to ascertain whether the driver and guard of the train are also involved in the case. Counting of the liquor cartons is underway. The police are further investigating the matter.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled Indian items worth around Tk 2.50 crore from Benapole in Jashore and Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur in last two days. BGB members seized a truck with smuggled salt, saris, three pieces, cosmetics and medicines worth Tk 1.50 crore at Amrakhali under Benapole Port Police Station on Friday night, reports our correspondent. Salim Reza, commanding officer of 49 BGB Battalion, said, “A BGB team, following a tip, raided the area at 10:00pm and seized the goods worth Tk 1.50 crore. The items were deposited to Jashore customs godown.” Earlier on Thursday, BGB seized smuggled tems from Ghasuria and Satkuri areas in Hakimpur, reports our Dinajpur correspondent. The goods include 1,165 bottles of Phensedyl, 63 costly saris and 2.82 lakh cow fattening pills, said Nayeb Subedar Abu Sayed, commander of Mongla BGB camp in Hakimpur.
Tipped off, the border guards raided Ghasuria and Satkuri areas and seized the goods worth Tk 94 lakh while the smugglers managed to flee, he said.

All eight men have had their visas canceled. “Targeting illicit tobacco is an operational priority for the ABF and through the use of intelligence, X-ray capability, tobacco detector dogs and our highly skilled officers, the ABF is well placed to detect illicit tobacco at our airports,” ABF Regional Commander Craig Palmer said. “People may think bringing in undeclared tobacco is harmless, but this trade has a massive cost on the Australian economy and those caught deliberately evading duty should expect to face fines, removal from Australia or even prosecution.”
