Lucknow: A 22-year-old man was arrested here for allegedly possessing counterfeit Indian currency notes amounting to Rs 1.97 lakh, police said on Monday. The accused, Amir Khan, hailing from Bareilly district, was apprehended by the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Charbagh railway station on Sunday. He was travelling from Malda in West Bengal to Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, they said. In a press release, the police said they recovered a total of 394 counterfeit notes, each with a face value of Rs 500, amounting to Rs 1,97,000. During interrogation Amir told police that he worked at a footwear shop in Delhi’s Madanpur Khadar area and lived in Sarita Vihar.
Fake US banknotes land senior citizen behind bars
KUALA LUMPUR: A senior citizen has been sentenced to 10 months in prison by the Sessions Court here for possessing 12 counterfeit United States banknotes amounting to US$1,200 three months ago.
Judge Azrul Darus handed down the sentence to trader Woo Tuck Lab, 64, after he pleaded guilty to the charge and ordered him to serve his jail term starting from the date of his arrest on June 20.

The Customs and Excise Department revealed on Saturday that officers had intercepted a suspicious fishing boat in the waters off Hong Kong’s southernmost island, Po Toi, the previous morning and seized the cigarettes after an inspection.

The Australian Border Force’s crackdown in the illicit tobacco market claimed a significant win this week, with more than 45 million illicit cigarettes and close to 6,500kg of tobacco being stopped at the border within five days.

Customs Dept seizes illegal cigarettes from Amritsar airport
The Customs Department has seized cigarettes being imported illegally by passengers at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar in different cases.
All the passengers had landed here from Phnom Penh (Cambodia) via Kuala Lumpur flight No. MH0206. The smuggled cigarettes, having the identical brand Gold Flake, were seized on September 16 under relevant provisions of Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is under process.
According to information, 36,800 cigarette sticks were recovered from the baggage of Gaurav Bidlan worth Rs 6.25 lakh; 38,400 cigarette sticks from Pruthi Anuj valued at Rs 6.52 lakh; 37,400 cigarette sticks with a market value of Rs 6.35 lakh and 37,600 cigarette sticks worth Rs 6.39 lakh.
