25kg gold seized in largest ever haul at Trivandrum airport
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a major haul, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized gold worth Rs 8.5 crore from a passenger at Trivandrum International Airport on Monday. It is the highest-ever seizure of gold reported at the airport. The passenger has been identified as Sunil, a native of Thirumala, who arrived from Muscat. He reached Trivandrum Airport in Oman Air flight WY 211 around 7.30am. Based on intelligence information, DRI regional unit officers intercepted the passenger on his arrival. The gold was found in the two hand bags carried by the passenger. The gold in form of bars was covered in aluminium foil in two packets. There were a total of 25 gold biscuits, each weighing 1kg, in the packets. “This is the highest quantity of gold seized at the airport. The passenger had gone to Muscat through visiting visa. Considering the permissible weight limit of cabin baggage in the flight, it is being investigated how the passenger took the bags inside the aircraft,” said a DRI official. A probe has been launched by DRI team under Customs Act.

The Anti-FICN (Fake Indian Currency Note) team of STF, Kolkata, on Monday, arrested two Tamil Nadu based FICN racketeers from near Shaheed Minar in Kolkata. The police have seized counterfeit Indian currency notes amounting to Rs 2, 00,000/- of denominations (Rs 2000/- × 100 pcs) in total from their possession. The arrested persons are identified as Mani Govindan and Velu Mallappan. In April too, Kolkata Police had seized FICN of Rs 5 lakh face value and had arrested two persons in connection with this case. The two FICN racketeers were arrested from the crossing of Gosto Paul Sarani and Leslie Claudius Sarani in Central Kolkata. It may be recalled that the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) district secretary Ambar Mitra had recently claimed that Kaliachak in West Bengal has always been the entry gate of fake currency in India. Mitra also remarked that the situation has remained unchanged despite demonetisation.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized gold bars worth nearly Rs eight crore which was smuggled into India from Myanmar, and arrested six people for allegedly being a part of the smuggling racket, according to an official statement issue Tuesday. The gold was smuggled into India from Myanmar through the porous Indo-Myanmar border at Moreh in Manipur. Acting on specific inputs, DRI officials Monday seized 24.15 kg gold bars valued at Rs 7.99 crore from the possession of six people who were travelling by bus from Manipur to Siliguri via Coochbehar, the statement said. The six people who have been arrested are residents of Manipur and were engaged in carrying smuggled foreign-origin gold for quite some time now, the DRI said in the statement.

PATNA: Liquor worth lakhs of rupees were seized and six people were held from a Duronto Express train in Barh area of Bihar’s Patna on Tuesday. According to the police, the liquor was being transported from West Bengal to the state, where liquor is prohibited. “We came to know that a Duronto Express stopped between Barh and Shahari Halt railway stations and liquor cartons were being unloaded. The police reached there and recovered a huge amount of liquor from the place,” Barh SHO Sanjeet Kumar said. Singh informed that the police were questioning the accused and trying to ascertain whether the driver and guard of the train are also involved in the case. Counting of the liquor cartons is underway. The police are further investigating the matter.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled Indian items worth around Tk 2.50 crore from Benapole in Jashore and Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur in last two days. BGB members seized a truck with smuggled salt, saris, three pieces, cosmetics and medicines worth Tk 1.50 crore at Amrakhali under Benapole Port Police Station on Friday night, reports our correspondent. Salim Reza, commanding officer of 49 BGB Battalion, said, “A BGB team, following a tip, raided the area at 10:00pm and seized the goods worth Tk 1.50 crore. The items were deposited to Jashore customs godown.” Earlier on Thursday, BGB seized smuggled tems from Ghasuria and Satkuri areas in Hakimpur, reports our Dinajpur correspondent. The goods include 1,165 bottles of Phensedyl, 63 costly saris and 2.82 lakh cow fattening pills, said Nayeb Subedar Abu Sayed, commander of Mongla BGB camp in Hakimpur.
Tipped off, the border guards raided Ghasuria and Satkuri areas and seized the goods worth Tk 94 lakh while the smugglers managed to flee, he said.

Woman fined $990,000 for smuggling gold bars in rectum.
A Korean woman who smuggled 790 million won of gold bars into Korea in her rectum was jailed for a year and fined 1.16 billion won ($990,000) Tuesday. The Incheon District Court heard that the woman smuggled 16 kilograms of gold from China over 16 trips during 2016. The defendant, 67, brought in 80 gold bars, each weighing 200 grams. The criminal, whose name was withheld, was paid by her accomplice about 300,000 won every time she returned from China with the gold. The court said it was her first offense and she was only involved in transporting the gold into the country. Prosecutors also indicted the woman on a separate charge of smuggling some 35 gold bars into Japan from March to April 2016 using the same method.

Johor Customs seizes RM2.1mil in contraband following three raids.
JOHOR BARU: The Customs Department seized more than RM2.1mil worth of smuggled fireworks, cigarettes and liquor in a series of raids in Taman Bukit Indah and Kulai here. State Customs director Datuk Mohammad Hamiddan Maryani (pic) said the contraband was confiscated from May 3 to May 6 at three different locations. “The first seizure was made during a raid at 2.45pm last Friday (May 3) at a two-storey house at Jalan Indah, Taman Bukit Indah, where we found liquor, fireworks, and cigarettes. “The Customs team found 3,854 litres of beer, 1,509 litres of imported liquor, and 372 litres of local liquor aside from 704kg of fireworks and 383,600 sticks of cigarettes. “The confiscated items are worth RM79,719 with tax valued at RM461,917,” he said. Mohammad Hamiddan was met by reporters at a press conference at Menara Kastam Johor Baru here on Tuesday (May 7).

Airport employee held for smuggling gold worth 3cr.
A contract employee of Trivandrum International Airport was held for smuggling about ten kilograms of gold, worth about Rs 3 crore. Five ground handling employees on contract at the airport were also held earlier this month for gold smuggling. The modus operandi of the racket is that carriers posing as passengers would bring the gold from Gulf countries and it was then handed over to the ground handling employees at the airport. The ground handling employees would smuggle it out of the airport evading customs checks. The one held on Tuesday was identified as Anish, who was working as an air conditioner mechanic. Airport CISF security officers found Anish in suspicious circumstance and he even tried to run away. But he was held and handed over to the air customs officials at the airport.
