Over 200 iPhones worth Rs 2.8 cr seized from couple at Bengaluru airport
The police told the media that the couple were acting at the behest of a big smuggling racket. Over 200 iPhones worth Rs 2.8 crore were seized at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport on Sunday by Customs officials from a couple. The couple are of Indian origin but are United States passport holders and were detained after the phones were seized from their baggage. They were produced before a magistrate on Sunday who remanded them to judicial custody till March 12.
Officials have dubbed this as one of the biggest seizures at the airport and told the media that the couple were acting at the behest of a big smuggling racket that had strong connections in Bengaluru. The New Indian Express quoted a top official as saying, “The phones were the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max models and their total value is Rs 2,74,19,400. A total of 37 debit and credit cards used in the purchase were also seized from them.” The official added that the scanning of their luggage had led to the seizure.
The middle-aged couple had arrived at the international airport during the wee hours via an Air France flight from Paris. They both flew to France from Mumbai on February 13 allegedly to purchase the consignment there, the Times of India reported.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized smuggled foreign cigarettes worth Rs 4.75 crore near Nhava Sheva Port.
“Specific intelligence was received by officers of DRI, Mumbai that a large quantity of cigarettes of foreign origin were being attempted to be smuggled into India in an Import consignment arriving from Dubai. Hence, the DRI officers identified the suspected consignment and intercepted it at a container freight station near Nhava Sheva Port,” said a senior officer.
Examination of the said import consignment was done under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962 which resulted in the recovery of cigarettes of foreign origin. Total 21,60,000 cigarette sticks of smuggled cigarettes of Gudang Garam valued at Rs. 4,75,20,000 were seized. Declared cargo of wallets was kept in front-side of the container so as to conceal the cigarettes.
According to DRI, the investigation revealed that the aforesaid consignment was imported using Importer Exporter Code (IEC) which has been obtained by misusing KYC documents.

Rajkot: The local crime branch of Kutch police seized Indian Made Foreign Liquor worth Rs 39.2 lakh and arrested two persons in a raid at Anjar on Friday night.
Police said that they had received information about the distribution of liquor from a farm in Bhimasar village of Anjar taluka.
Based on the tip-off, cops raided the farm and nabbed Madeva Dangar and Karan Inti, both residents of Anjar taluka. Cops also seized 8,796 bottles of IMFL and 3,360 beer cans.
Police have declared four persons as absconders and seized an SUV used by the accused to transport the liquor.

A team from Indian Customs seized high-end mobile phones and other undeclared goods worth ₹15 crore over the weekend which were being smuggled through the postal service.
A total of around 180gm of gold, 1,470 mobile phones, 322 smart-watches, 64 drones, 41 Bluetooth earphones, 391 cigarette sleeves and 36 auto parts, collectively worth around ₹15 crore were seized by the Customs officers.
The seizures were made after officers were tipped off about illegal movements of the goods, which included gold, mobile phones, drones, smart-watches and cigarettes, which were smuggled via post by non-declaration of the items, thus evading the Customs and Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST).
The rummaging &intelligence division of the Preventive Commissionerate (New Customs House) in Ballard Estate conducted an anti-smuggling operation and the first raid was conducted on February 18 at the MIDC post office in Andheri.
Subsequent raids were conducted at Foreign Post Office (FPO) in Ballard Estate, and Air Parcel Sorting Office (APSO) at Vile Parle (East) on February 20 and 21.

Jain and a buyer were arrested and booked under IPC section 420 (cheating) and the relevant sections of the Copyright Act. The duo was produced in court on Saturday and both got bail.

An official told news agency KNS that Petrol pumps, grocery stores and electronic goods shops were inspected. During the inspection, counterfeit LEDs including counterfeits of SONY LED, SAMSUNG LED and LG LED were seized and fine worth 50000 also recovered by Legal Metrology Department for violation of Section 11, 18 and Section 36 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 read with the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
He said that desides, other LEDs that did not adhere to the labelling norms were also seized by Legal Metrology Unit Kupwara and seizure memo was issued against the sellers.
Earlier, Legal Metrology Unit Baramulla also seized counterfeit Sensodyne and Colgate toothpastes from Sopore area of Baramulla District.
He said that further legal proceedings are underway in these cases. Sellers of counterfeit goods are unable to provide valid purchase bills for the goods they are offering for sale.

Federal agents have seized more than 10 million fake 3M brand N95 masks in recent weeks, the result of an ongoing investigation into counterfeits sold in at least five states to hospitals, medical facilities and government agencies.
The most recent seizures occurred Thursday when Homeland Security agents intercepted hundreds of thousands of counterfeit 3M masks in an East Coast warehouse that were set to be distributed, officials said.
Investigators also notified about 6,000 potential victims in at least 12 states including hospitals, medical facilities and others who may have unknowingly purchased knockoffs, urging them to stop using the medical-grade masks. Officials encouraged medical workers and companies to go to 3Ms website for tips on how to spot fakes.
“Not only do they give a false sense of security, how dangerous is the exposed individual without any protective gear? They have no utility whatsoever,” Homeland Security Secretary Ali Mayorkas said of the fake masks.

HYDERABAD: Customs sleuths at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport have arrested two passengers trying to smuggle out gold and seized 1.4 kilo gold from their possession.
On February 17, Customs sleuths intercepted two passengers who arrived from Dubai by fly Dubai flight (FZ-8779).
When subjected to frisking, customs officials found that the accused had concealed gold paste in the waistband of their jeans and they had concealed gold biscuits in a torch light.
The total weight of the seized gold was 1.4 kilos and its value is Rs 69.6 lakh.
The two accused have been booked under the Customs Act.

TRICHY: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths seized 2.93 kg of gold in paste form from three air passengers, including a woman, who arrived at the Trichy airport from Kuala Lumpur on Monday night. The seized gold was worth Rs 1.43 crore.
Based on a tip-off, DRI officials screened passengers. They found the activities of the three passengers suspicious and detained them. The trio arrived in Trichy at 7.30 pm in Air India Express from Kuala Lumpur.
When officials intensified their screening operation, they found that the trio had attempted to smuggle gold in paste form. The passengers were identified as Malini, 38, of Karaikal and Kaleel Rahman, 42, and Rahman, 38, of Ramanathapuram.
They hid the gold in between their belongings. Malini had brought 1.100 kg gold, Kaleel carried 850 gram and Rahman 980 grams of gold. All three were arrested and further investigations were on.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport seized more than $60,000 in unreported cash from an Amsterdam-bound passenger earlier this month.
During an outbound examination of the woman’s luggage on February 3, CBP officers noticed bundles of cash stashed inside of envelopes that were concealed in a package of sanitary pads.
The officers seized the money because the woman, who told officials she was only carrying $1,000, violated currency reporting requirements.
Amounts over $10,000 must be reported to a CBP officer upon arrival to or prior to exiting the U.S. Penalties for violations can include civil fines and the seizure of the currency.
“CBP enforces these regulations to combat money laundering or other criminal offenses,” Port Director Robert Larkin said in a statement accompanying last week’s news release. “I’m proud of our officers and the work they do to interrupt currency smuggling operations and illegal activities daily.”
