BENGALURU: After a hiatus, two smugglers from Chennai were caught with a whopping 48,000 cigarettes worth Rs 8.2 lakh at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). Four suitcases filled with cartons of smuggled cigarettes were seized from the duo who landed from Bangkok on Monday.
Sources with the air intelligence unit of Bengaluru Customs said the two men in their 30s landed at KIA on Thai AirAsiaflight FD 137 with the four large suitcases.
Customssleuths opened them to find cartons of cigarettes, mainly of foreign brands that are prohibited for sale in India without proper licence.
Sleuths said the cigarettes were smuggled in from the Thailand capital at the behest of gangs possibly operating in Bengaluru or Chennai.
