Mangaluru: The Customs officials at Mangaluru International Airport have seized gold from several persons in several incidents, totalling Rs 42.9 lakh, between October 31 and November 5.
According to officials, on October 31 and November 2, based on suspicious behaviour of two passengers travelling from Dubai by Air India Express flight IX 814, Customs officers intercepted them, and a detailed examination was done.
The officials found gold in paste form concealed in double-layered underwear, double-layered socks, inside the trousers’ loop, and one gold chain (24 carat) concealed in socks, totalling 288 grams valued at Rs 17.4 lakh.
On November 5, a resident of Kasaragod in Kerala, flying from Dubai to Mangaluru by Air India Express flight IX 814, was intercepted, and on scanning and open examination of his trolley bag, officials found gold of 24 carat purity in the form of yellowish coloured powder concealed in a silver coloured pouch along with chocolates in seven chocolate packets, weighing 420 grams and valued at Rs 25.5 lakh. Officials said cases have been registered and investigations are ongoing.
