In a recent operation based on specific intelligence, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) made a significant breakthrough in South Mumbai’s renowned Zaveri Bazar. On April 22, a DRI team raided a melting facility in the area, seizing a total of 9.31 Kg of gold in various forms, including foreign-origin gold, and 16.66 Kg of silver.
The DRI officers not only confiscated the precious metals but also apprehended the operator of the melting facility and a key member of the syndicate responsible for coordinating carriers and processing the smuggled gold. It was discovered that gold smuggled from Africa through Mumbai International Airport was being processed at this melting facility to remove foreign markings before being introduced into the local market.
